Birlas, Tatas to buy out Cingular in IDEA

The Tatas and Birlas, two of the country’s largest business groups, on Saturday decided to acquire US-based Cingular’s 33% stake in Idea Cellular, the fourth largest cellular service provider in India, for a consideration of $300 million (Rs 1,500 crore). With the acquisition, Birlas would own 50%, while Tatas (48%) and American International Group (AIG) the remaining 2%. The move to acquire the US company’s stake came after the Singapore’s Technologies Telemedia (STT) and Telekom Malaysia combine failed in its attempt to acquire 48% stake in Idea for $390 million through a combination of acquiring Cingular’s stake and investing fresh money.
The government had put spokes in the wheels of both STT and Telecom Malaysia’s citing Singtel’s stake in Bharti Telecom. No foreign operator could hold more than 10% stake in more than one telecom company. Idea and Bharti are rivals in many cirlces like in Maharashtra. Temasek, the private equity arm of government of Singapore owned stake in SIngtel and Singapore Technology Telemedia.

Idea is way behind Airtel’s 1.2 crore subscriber base and Reliance’s 1.1 crore. Its avergae revenue per subscriber (ARPU) is Rs 381.17, way below its rivals at more than Rs 400.

Horror at Mother Teresa’s home

Kolkata: An undercover investigation has revealed poor conditions endured by children in a Kolkata care home run by Missionaries of Charity, the order founded by Mother Teresa. Around 50 disabled children, aged six months to 12 years, in the home have their hands bound during meal times and are tethered to their cots at night. Martin Gallagher, a former operations director of MENCAP, said last week that it was unacceptable for the children to be tied up. “It’s a breach of their human rights,” he said.

Since Mother Teresa’s death in 1997, her charitable order has continued with her work. It has more than 700 centres in 133 countries. Even when Mother Teresa was alive, the standards at some of her homes were criticised. Some workers complained of dirty conditions and claimed children suffered neglect.

A new investigation at one of the order’s homes in Kolkata, called Daya Dan, has raised fresh concerns. An undercover investigator, who was working there as a volunteer, filmed children being fed while their hands bound with what appeared to be strips of cloth. When the undercover worker returned to the home at night, he found children bound to their cots with similar strips, which prevented them from moving more than 2 feet. He also filmed children being left unattended in the toilet, at times for up to 20 minutes. Staff seemed to be poorly trained in dealing with disabled children.

When questioned about why the children were tied to their beds, a nun in the order said: “It’s a terrible thing to do, but there might be a reason. I’ve not been to that home and not heard anything about that at all.”

Donal MacIntyre, who conducted the investigation for Five News, said he was shocked by what he had found. “There are strategies for looking after disabled children that minimise stressful situations,” he said, “but, as a result of poor training and lack of resources, staff are resorting to shocking practices. “Unless the Missionaries of Charity improve their standards, they risk damaging not only the health of those in their care but also the reputation of one of the world’s most remarkable women.” Sister Nirmala Joshi, now superior general of the order, was not available for comments.

Sunday Times News Service Yes, they are tied: Sister The Times of India independently confirmed the story. Sister Nirmala, superior-general of the Missionaries of Charity, was abroad. In her absence, Mother House spokesperson Sister Christie responded to the TOI’s queries. She confirmed: “Daya Dan has 59 children. Of them some are spastics. These children are tied up, but for limited periods only. This is done for their safety. These children can easily harm themselves.’’

A team of astronomers systematically scanning the far reaches of the solar system has discovered a distant, icy world that is bigger than Pluto but so far away the head of a pin held at arm's length would blot out the sun. The discovery, if confirmed, would force astronomers to re-write their textbooks and give school kids a 10th planet to memorize once a governing body sanctions the still-secret name proposed by a trio of discoverers. The size of the planet was inferred by observations of its brightness.
"Even if it reflected 100 percent of the light reaching it, it would still be as big as Pluto," Brown said in an earlier statement. "I'd say it's probably one and a half times the size of Pluto, but we're not sure yet of the final size." Reff:

Acer..Ferrari...Branding..

No one dare to say that brading is not a crucial task for organizations..However this is often ignored by many of the product managers..A good example I can quote is Ipod..If we comapre this little mp3 player with any other competetor products such as Creatives Zentouch or Iriver many of the technical reviews say ipod lags in price, memory, performance, even sound clarity, or features..But on a given day you ask any potential customer without any doubt the person will opt for Ipod..(atleast many of my pals)...

Guess lately Acer has been smitten by the same..I feel its a very good move to co-brand with Ferari...At the same time I am sure the designers have done a great job..the piece just look sexy and 'chic'..

Some of the featuers include,

AMD Athlon™ XP-M processor 2500+ -- designed expressly for the Ferrari 3000 -- gives you the lead.( hear guys...not Pentium based)

1 GB memory ( My IBM t42 already equipped with 2 GB..Yes you heard it right)

Super-sharp 15" SXGA+ TFT colour LCD screen presents you with a grand view of the cyberworld

Here goes some more pictures of this sexy "lap top"..

Are you listening Schumi, they claim that this master piece is similar to ferari in many ways..even a specially designed mouse adds the "feal"...But please dont try to ride this...it cant take up your spead..(pun unintended)

Blog...Backup...Do I need or Need not...

Its about three months I have started my blog and already I have questions about its availability...What if the same happens to XiaXue blog or some other cases...Dont you think its such a horrible thing and you need to have a backup of all these thoughts..
Wondering how can I do that and finally checked the Blogger help files...
some information there,
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=130&query=Backup&topic=0&type=f
But I am not sure weather I will be doing or not...Coz the way I see it is a bit lengthy n time spending..rather I will be glad to have a tool which can copy with a single click ..some tools found on net such as Httrack, ( Good its a freeware)...or there are some other tools and articles which tried to explained..one suggestion was to keep everything on your local harddisk..:?..Dont you think its the most stupid way to suggest to a blogger that copy everything(Ctrl+c Ctrl+V) and paste it on the local hard disk..what if that blog is about few hundred posts..May be the auther can suggest that it shall be done from the first post..then I dont have any comments..;)
Anyway finally I decided to go with HTtrack..seems some thing good..then I will post all the content to another blog...A kinda mirroring...so this weekend I have got enough work to do...

Coffee...Different styles...Courtesy:Nescafe

Styles of coffee round the world.
Espresso'Espresso' is Italian for 'express' or 'fast'.Espresso is reputed to be the base of all great coffees. Although the praise for this style of coffee goes to the Italians, the first espresso machine was actually developed in France. It was a rather crude attempt, however, and it was the Italians who developed it into the machine that we know today. An espresso machine uses pressure to force hot water through finely ground coffee.

In Italy, the price of a cup of espresso is regulated by the government. The Italians serve espresso in a 'demitasse' (meaning half-cup), containing 1 1/2 ounces of rich, dark, coffee with a golden crema (or cream) on top. For those who like an intense coffee experience.

Cappuccino
A frothy mixture of espresso and steamed milk in equal measure.

MacchiatoEspresso with a splash or spot (translation of 'macchia') of steamed milk.

Americano
Espresso with hot water added.

LatteEspresso with steamed milk and a dollop of frothed milk on top (more milky than a cappuccino).

Corretto
Espresso spiked with spirit, e.g. GrappaRomanoEspresso served with a slice of lemon.

Ristretto
Double-strength espresso.

Con Panna
Espresso topped with a dollop of whipped cream.

Granita de CafféCold
espresso poured over crushed ice.

Café au laitFrench coffee with milk.

Demi-crémeHalf coffee, half cream or milk.

Café con Leche
Spanish or Portuguese dark roasted coffee mixed with sugar and served with heated milk.

Cafeate
Nicuraguan coffee with milk.

Mocha
One-third espresso, one-third hot chocolate, and one-third steamed milk.

Yahoo working on blog search tool?

It appears Yahoo may be working on blog search technology that would compete with Technorati. In a blog posting earlier this week, Ian Forrester writes about a talk given at Open Tech 2005 last weekend in London by Yahoo's Jeremy Zawodny.

"Jeremy Zawodny was very interesting and pointed out a couple of things: The rumors about Yahoo working on a Technorati killer, are true. The aggregator will support Microformats and RSS Extensions, including some of Yahoo's rivals. Yahoo will be REALLY opening up more APIs. Zawodny failed or kept very quiet about the Konfabulator take over. Yahoo are counting RSS/Atom as a type of API not just as a syndication format," the blog says.

Meanwhile, Zawodny's blog mentions the trip, but is mum on the talk. A Yahoo spokeswoman said the company had no comment.

Black hat security conference..

Experts are warning that the popularity of antivirus software could turn the defensive measure into a security risk

The technology is commonly installed on PCs, servers, network gateways and mobile devices. As it becomes more widespread, the more attractive a target it becomes for cybercriminals, said researchers at Internet Security Systems.

"Antivirus could potentially be the weak point hackers might exploit to break into your network," said Neel Mehta, the team leader of X-Force Research at Internet Security Systems in Atlanta. "It is a key security mechanism, and it is important to have it. But at the same time, it could also be an attack vector."
Mehta and fellow ISS researcher Alex Wheeler plan to outline vulnerabilities in antivirus products on stage at the
Black Hat Briefings, which kicks off on Wednesday. The security conference draws hackers and security experts to Las Vegas every year. The event is followed by the DefCon, the security industry confab famous for its hacker activity, which starts Friday.

The ISS researchers will demonstrate hacking into systems using known and fixed flaws in antivirus products, not new security holes that have not been publicly disclosed yet, Mehta said. "We're going to show that it is a credible threat and demonstrate exploits," he said.

Weaknesses in antivirus software is only one of the topics on the conference agenda. Researchers will also cover the use of USB keys to get into Windows PCs, intrusions into Oracle products and the security of Cisco Systems routers.
Experts from SPI Dynamics, which specializes in Web application security, plan to highlight problems with the drivers that make USB devices work on computers in a session titled "Plug and Root, the USB Key to the Kingdom." They will delve into how an attacker could gain access to an otherwise locked system via such security holes

Cisco's routers are part of the core plumbing of the Internet, and Cisco's IOS, or Internetwork Operating System, runs on those routers. At Black Hat, ISS researcher Michael Lynn will probe IOS security for possible weaknesses. Large-scale router attacks could disrupt the performance of the Internet.

Black hat security conference..

Some quite good information from Black Hat security conference...

Flaws in how applications handle those file formats are drawing interest among security researchers, according to speakers at the Black Hat security conference here.

Some of those bugs can be serious: A victim's PC could be hijacked by simply viewing an image on a Web site or in an e-mail. Microsoft issued
three "critical" security bulletins earlier this month, two related to file format flaws.

There could be a significant increase in the discovery of such flaws. iDefense, a security intelligence company, is making available tools that let researchers automate the discovery of file format vulnerabilities. The company
released the tools Thursday in conjunction with Black Hat.

"I really do think this is a low-hanging-fruit area for vulnerabilities," Michael Sutton, a lab director at iDefense, said in a presentation at Black Hat. iDefense itself has found several file format flaws. "We really did not work hard to find the vulnerabilities. We did work hard on the tools."
The tools, for Windows and Linux, can automatically tweak files bit-for-bit and then open the malformed file in any application. If an error is found in the opening of the file, the tool will capture the error data. The researcher can then investigate that data, which may point to a vulnerability, according to iDefense.
"These are not tools where you just push a button and the vulnerability shows up," Sutton said. "It pinpoints an exception and then you as a researcher have to investigate."

The tools, called FileFuzz for Windows and SpikeFile and NotSpikeFile for Linux, could be used with malicious intent, but iDefense hopes they will be used to help protect users. "These don't have to be used for evil purposes. They can be used for good, and I hope they will be," Sutton said.

One Black Hat attendee said he expects only well-intended security researchers to use the tools. "These tools only discover whether an application and a format could have a vulnerability," said Joshua Feldman, a security engineer at Science Applications International. "This is definitely for the white hats."
The tools are open source, which means others can expand and improve upon them. They're available for download from the iDefense site.

Highest ever rain fall in India...

The highest-ever rainfall recorded in a single day in India shut down the financial hub of Mumbai, snapped communication lines, closed airports and forced thousands of people to sleep in their offices or walk home during the night, officials said Wednesday.

Troops were deployed after the sudden rains -- measuring up to 94.4 centimeters (37.1 inches) in one day in some areas of Mumbai -- stranded tens of thousands of people.

India's previous heaviest rainfall, recorded at Cherrapunji in the Meghalaya state, one of the rainiest places on Earth, was 83.82 centimeters (33 inches) on July 12, 1910, Sharma said.

"Most places in India don't receive this kind of rainfall in a year. This is the highest-ever recorded in India's history. We have to compare it with world records to find out if this was the highest in the world," RV Sharma, director of the meteorological department, told The Associated Press.
The All India Radio reported about 150,000 people were stranded in railway stations across Mumbai, India's main financial center.

Early Wednesday, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, the state's top elected official, called the army, navy and home guards to help with the relief effort.

"Inflatable rafts will be used to reach stranded people. Please try to stay where you are and don't leave your homes," he said.

Tens of thousands of people were stranded for hours on roads in Bombay, and its airport -- one of the busiest in the country -- was shut Tuesday evening. All incoming flights were diverted to New Delhi and other airports

Few days back I was smitten by the thoughts of business strategy while sitting in side a meeting with big bosses. That time it happened to hear about few of the companies like Smart in Philliphines, Bharti in India(ofcourse I knew it but only realized about it then), another Indonesian company. The speciality about these companies are these companies as well as countries are often considered to be a third world or developing countries and no body is bothered to look at them..But now it seems most of the management gurus, strategists, n top exec are very curious to know about their success.

The thing which is common to these companies are all these are from the developing world, and represent arguably the most populous nations in those specific regions..The other one is all these are TELCOs...While the world giants such as AT&T,Vodaphone,Sonera,&Telstra are talking about cost cutting; Higher ROI, Outsourcing and other measurements to stay profitable these companies were profitable already and they are surviving with a ARPU of < $5. Then it made me to remember how the old people back home used to advise us..When you want to venture in some thing focuss on something which masses need;not the few top notch people dream..

That made these companies special..

Then I grab the book "The fortune at the bottom of the pyramid" written by argubly one of the best management guru at the moment Mr. C.K Prahlad.

He needs no introduction; every management student in India and internationally knows the name C.K. Prahalad. He is known not only for his prolific works also for his management perceptions and strategies.
CK Prahalad is a professor, researcher, speaker, author and prominent consultant. Business Week has called him “a brilliant teacher at the University of Michigan” and also described him as “maybe the most influential thinker on business strategy today.”

In addition to serving as the Harvey C. Freuhauf Professor of Business Administration at the University Of Michigan Business School, Prahalad specializes in corporate strategy and the role of top management in large, diversified, multinational corporations.

In 1994 he co-authored the bestseller, Competing for the Future, with Gary Hamel. Translated into 14 languages, it was named the Best Selling Business Book of the Year in 1994. Prahalad is particularly well known for the work he has conducted with fellow strategy expert Gary Hamel. This includes the articles The Core Competence of the Corporation (Harvard Business Review, May-June, 1990), Competing in the New Economy: Managing Out of Bounds (Strategic Management Journal, Vol. 17, No. 3, March, 1996) as well as the bestselling book Competing for the Future: Breakthrough Strategies for Seizing Control of Your Industry and Creating the Markets of Tomorrow (1994).

He has won numerous awards. The most recent include the McKinsey Prize three times, the SMR-PWC award, and the ANBAR Electronic Citation of Excellence.

A prominent world-class guru, Professor Prahalad has consulted with the world's foremost companies, such as Ahlstrom, AT&T, Cargill, Citicorp, Eastman Chemical, Kodak, Oracle, Philips, Quantum, Revlon, Steelcase, and Unilever. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of NCR Corporation, Hindustan Lever Limited and the World Resources Institute and services on the Board of Directors of NCR Corporation, Hindustan Lever Limited and the World Resources Institute.

His latest book, ‘The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits’, proves that the future will develop from serving the poor, because the innovations that are developed are superior-- top quality, low price, high volume and world-scale. Only the best innovations will work for both sides of the equation, those in poverty and those in the “developed” countries.

Books by C.K. Prahalad

  • The fortune at the bottom of the Pyramid (August 25, 2004)
  • Competing for the future (Co-authored with Gary Hamel)
  • The Future of Competition: Co-Creating Unique Value with Customers (2004 - co-authored with Venkat Ramaswamy)

  • The Core Competence of the Corporation", co-authored with Gary Hamel (1990)
  • Strategic Intent", also co-authored with Gary Hamel (1989)
  • The New Frontier of Experience Innovation" published in Sloan Management Review won the SMR-PWC award for the best paper published in 2003
  • Weak Signals vs. Strong Paradigms", published in the Journal of Marketing Research (1995) was awarded the 1997 ANBAR Electronic Citation of Excellence

  • A Strategy for Growth: The Role of Core Competence in the Corporation" won the European Foundation for Management Award in 1993

I guess its getting bigger and bigger...Anyway even a dedicated blog itself will be less to talk about Mr.C.K Prahlad...I wish one day I can meet him in person..(yeah I am quite optimistic)..

A picture of Dal Lake - Kashmir

A picture got it via a fwd mail..(Thx to the photographer)

Kashmir...Heaven on the earth.....Mera pyaraa Hindustan

Kashmir, “The Paradise on Earth”, is a history in making. Kashmir has a glorious past, a painful present and an uncertain future. The modern state of Jammu & Kashmir (pre 1947) included Jammu, Ladakh, Gilgit, Hunza, Nagar, Purial and Yasin. It covered an area of 86024 sq miles, situated between 32 deg 78' to 36 deg 58' and from 73 deg 27' to 80 deg 72'.
The history of Kashmir is well documented and there are ample reminders of the ancient inhabitants of this valley, still lying around in Kashmir. Mythological tradition has it that, the valley originally was a huge lake called “Satisar” [land of Goddess Sati, consort of Lord Shiva], and its waters were blocked near Varamulla [present town of Baramulla]. Modern geologists also confirm this myth as true.

According to the oldest manuscript on Kashmir “Nilvat Puran”, in Satisar there lived a demon named Jalod Bowa who killed and devoured the people of this region. A great saint named Kashyap, heard about the havoc that this demon was wrecking and performed penance for a long time. He was blessed by god and was able to cut the mountain, near Varamulla. This made it possible for the Satisar Lake to be drained into the plains below, and the land of Kashmir appeared. The demon was killed and the grateful people named the valley as "Kashyap-mar" and "Kashyap Pura". Kashmir also implies "land desicated from water", as it is derived from two words viz., “ka” (water) and Shimeer (to desicate). The earliest trace of habitation in the Kashmir valley has been discovered at Burzahom about 10 miles east of Srinagar. This site belongs to the Neolithic culture and it is characterized by numerous ground and polished stone axes, hoes, pestle and the bone implements. This site of Burzahom is only the 2nd such site known in the north west of the Indian sub continent. Close to Burzahom, archeologists have unearthed sites of ancient pit dwellers dating back to 3000 B.C. Though extensive research has not been concluded, yet it is quite evident that this site is the only such known settlement in the whole of India.

According to Kalhan, the renowned historian and author of “Rajtarangini”, Ashoka the Great ruled Kashmir and founded the old city of Srinagar. He built many temples and helped spread Buddhism in the Kashmir region. It was from here that Buddhism travelled to Central Asia, Tibet, China etc over the ages. The next well-known rulers were the Kushanas (Indo Greeks in origin). Among the better-known kings was Kanishka. He built many temples and Vihars in and around Srinagar. He also organized the 3rd great council of Buddhists at Kundalvana (present day Harwan near the Shalimar Gardens). There was a huge congregation of learned Buddhist monks from around the world. It is said that the entire proceedings of the conference were inscribed on copper plates in Sanskrit, and were deposited in a Vihar. These plates have not been discovered as yet but their discovery could certainly shed new light on one of the glorious eras of Kashmiri history.

During the Kushana period, Kashmir became one of the most influential centres of Buddhist learning and home to the most powerful Buddhist sect of northern India called SARVASTIVADA. After Kanishka, weak rulers who were inefficient and corrupt ruled the roast. Kashmir came under attack from the Huns, who brought untold miseries to the people of Kashmir. The next notable dynasty was the KARKOTA dynasty (beginning of the 8th century). Huen Tsang, the famous Chinese pilgrim, visited Kashmir during the rule of the 1st Karkota ruler Durlabhvardhan. He has left a detailed account of the people and has vouched for Kashmir being the centre of Sanskrit learning. Karkota dynasty gave Kashmir on of its greatest rulers, LALITADITYA MUKTA PID (724 - 761 A.D). He is known as the “Samudragupta of Kashmir”. He is credited with having invaded & conquered many countries in Asia and India. These included Punjab, Kannauj, Tibet, Ladakh, Badakshan, Bihar, Iran, Bengal, Orissa, South India, Gujarat, Malwa, Mewar & Sindh. Lalitaditya's capital was located close to the holy shrine of Khir Bhavani. Some of the temples built by him still remain, like the Martand temple built on Mattan Karewa.

After the Karkota rule, Kashmir again fell upon bad days and it was in 855 - 56 A.D that Maharaja Avantivarman of the Utpal dynasty brought some semblance to the chaos that was reigning. During his time, there was a burst of literary activity and numerous eminent men visited his court. Avantivarman founded his capital at Avantipur. He built 2 magnificent temples of Shiva and Vishnu, the ruins of which still attest to the grandeur of Avantivarman’s capital.

During Avantivarman’s reign “Suya” a great engineer corrected the course of the Vitasta River and provided more land to the people for cultivation. Suya’s memory is preserved till this day by the town of Sayapur (Sopore) founded by him at the point where river Vitasta leaves the basin of Mahapadomsar (Wular lake). From 1089 to 1101 A.D., King Harsha ruled Kashmir. His reign was however a story of lawlessness and misdeeds. During this period, Mongols invaded Kashmir and plundered the state extensively. The last of the Hindu rulers was Udyan Dev who was weak and inefficient. There were uprisings in various parts of the state, which paved the way for Muslim rule in Kashmir. After the death of Queen Kota, who was the wife of Udyan Dev, Shah Mir ascended the throne under the name of Sultan Shamas-ud-din and his dynasty ruled the state for 222 years. Two of the notable sultans of this dynasty were Sultan Shihabud-din and the great Sultan Zain-ul-Abdin. During the reign of some earlier sultans of this dynasty, there was large-scale persecution of Hindus, who were forced to leave the dynasty. However in 1420 A.D., Sultan Zain-ul-Abdin ascended the throne and ruled for nearly half a century. He ruled with an iron hand and was tolerant towards the Hindus. The Hindus who had fled, came back to the valley. He ushered in peace, prosperity & benevolent rule for the people Kashmir. He is credited with having introduced many of the arts and crafts, which are still renowned the world over. The Sultan invited competent teachers from the other countries to Kashmir and introduced carpet making, paper machie, silk rearing, shawls, embroidery, gun powder making etc in the valley. In reverence to Zain-ul-Abdin he is called BUDSHAH or “the great king”, and even today his mention brings a smile to the face of every Kashmiri. The Sultan founded a new city called NOWSHEDAR (now called Naushera). He also built the 1st wooden bridge on Jhelum River, which is till this day called the ZAINA KADAL (Zaina's bridge).

In 1579 the greatest of all the Mughal rulers Akbar, “the enlightened one”, visited Kashmir and fell in love with it. Thus began a love affair which was to result in some of the most beautiful gardens and monuments that cannot be found anywhere in India. Shalimar and Nishat gardens built on the banks of Dal lake, were Jehangir's gift to the valley. Jehangir also laid down gardens at Achable and Verinag.
Another Mughal, Shah Jahan. laid down Chashmashai gardens. However during the reign of the mughal rulers like Aurengzeb, there was anarchy and disorder in Kashmir. This was due to their intolerant policies and persecution of Hindus.

From 1752-1819, Afghan rulers controlled Kashmir for nearly 67 years. The Pathan rule can easily be called the darkest period of Kashmiri history. The valley was plundered and looted and the people were in a bad shape.
The Afghan rulers truly tested the spirit of the Kashmiri people. At last when they could suffer no more, a deputation led by Pandit Birbal Dhar and his son Pandit Rajakak Dhar, went to Lahore and requested the Sikh king Maharaja Ranjit Singh to conquer Kashmir and alleviate the suffering of the people. In 1819, 50,000 troops of the Maharaja invaded Kashmir and drove out the Pathans. Sikh rule lasted for 27 years and though it was not a very favorable reign, it was definitely an improvement over the Pathan rule. During this period there were numerous droughts, landslides, floods and severe snowfall.

The fighting between the Sikhs and the Britishers lead to Kashmir being transferred to Maharaja Gulab Singh who belonged to the DOGRA CLAN. Maharaja Gulab Singh paid a sum of 75 lakhs to the British as royalty. Maharaja Gulab Singh laid the foundation of the modern state of Jammu & Kashmir. Gulab Singh conquered the various regions of Jammu, Poonch, Ram Nagar, Basoli, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Bhimbar, Rajouri, Skardu, Khanmarg, Kiris, Kaplu, Sheghar, Astor Gilgit, Chitral, Yasin, Hunza, Magor and Pinial.

In fact Maharaja Gulab Singh was the only Indian ruler to have carved out a state from the ruins of the Sikh empire. The other fragments were brought under British rule. On 1885 Maharaja Pratap Singh ascended the throne and ruled for over 40 years. During his time, the real modernization of the state took place and various reforms were carried out. He constructed a water reservoir at Harwar and established an electricity generating unit at Mohra. A new administrative machinery was set in place and, roads and communications were improved. The nephew of Maharaja Pratap Singh, Maharaja Hari Singh ascended the throne in 1925 and governed the state till 1950.

India became independent on the 15th of August 1947 but Kashmir became the bone of contention between the newly formed countries of India and Pakistan. Kashmir at the time of India’s independence was a Muslim majority state ruled by a Hindu Maharaja. As the king was vascillating about which country to join, a Pakistani invasion prompted the king to seek help from India. Since then Kashmir has become the flash point between the two neighbors. As of now, India occupies 2/3rds of Kashmir. Further, in 1962, the Chinese invaded and occupied a part of Ladakh, increasing tensions in this area. The situation is still not normal as yet, but the people of Kashmir wait eagerly for peace to return.

Amitabh plays Gabbar in the new Sholay

The original Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’ had Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role of Jai. Gabbar Singh played by Amjad Khan then stood as his antagonistic in the film. ‘Sholay’ is again to be revisited and revitalized by Ram Gopal Varma as ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Sholay’. We’ve already heard that the newfound glory of the RGV camp Mohit Ahlawat is doing the role of Jai in the film. Since then there is a speculation who’ll play the Gabbar.

Things are out in the open now and Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has been zeroed in to play the legendary villain. He will play the villain in the refurbished version of a one of a kind film in the history of Indian cinema.

RGV believes that it is Gabbar Singh who is the pillar of strength for the success of ‘Sholay’. It’s his punch packed dialogues that still resound in the ears and he is the ultimate hero of the film. Gabbar Singh is again playing a vital role in the refurbished version of the film that will be set in the Mumbai underworld milieu.

Blogs...A difference...SPG...

A very good week to start with..Ofcourse started with a lot of post mortem meetings and fightings still i feel that am surrounded by a sense of happiness and i can feel very energitic...few days back while browsing the blogs and doing some google'ing found this blog by Wendy ; Another blog by Izzy (sarong Party Girl)...I have to say I am really shocked to see the google results for "sarong"..This blog is in the second place..;)
Anyway later I realized that this Blog deserves to be in the top place due to the way SPG wrote it...
Even I saw this in the local news paper Today...Few points made me to like the Sarong Party Girl's Blog are the topic is quite radical and not really "Singapore" minded...Normally its hard to see a local person speaking so radically and freely...I am not saying that the persons cant speak but they are binded by lot of so called morals/values which only exists in the books....if all these things really practises by the people then we wouldnt be experiencing the slightest crime on the planet...She speaks about SEX...A word which makes thousands self elevated moral police minds to react with utmost rage...good work people...in particular SPG..good to know about ur blog...

Gartner: Five most overhyped security threats - Security - News - ZDNet Asia
This is very much true...recently when I read through the papers ,information journels or TV commentatorys all the news related to security is typically spyware, malware, viruses, hackers and how to protect from these things..
But no body is speaking about the worth of the data..For example I've seen few SMEs in this region spending about almost 20% of their annual IT budgets on security appliances..Its the

God save the world

A real shock to me on this weekend...

Where are we heading with these kind of thoughts...I firmly believe no religion promotes hatred, bloodbath, fanatism...But how come so many people are listening to theose lunatic who claims that they are fighting for a clause and yet killing innocent children and people...if really these suicide bombers are willing to fight then go ahead to the battel ground..why killing the innocent people...

But the problem most of the countries facing is not any other issues rather than terrorism...a small storey from FOX says;

RELIGION VS PATRIOTISM
100,000 UK Muslims support bombers
Opinion Poll Says One Third Of The Community Wants ‘Decadent’ Western Society Wiped Out
By Rashmee Roshan Lall/TNN

London: Police continued on Saturday a massive manhunt for four failed suicide bombers, who are apparently intent on living another day only to die after detonating deadly payloads on the British capital, even as disparate media outlets reported that less than half of the large Muslim community thought of itself as British first and Muslim afterwards. Hot on the heels of a Sky television poll showing British Muslims had a deeply divided loyalty to their country, The Daily Telegraph newspaper on Saturday published a survey revealing nearly a third of Muslims to believe “Western society is decadent and immoral and should be brought to an end’’. The newspaper’s poll, which is thought likely to still further widen the chasm between communities in multi-cultural Britain, said roughly a quarter of Muslims sympathised with the motives of the London bombers. Commentators said the thin Muslim line appeared to be turning into the final, most decisive hurdle for an officially multi-cultural country with a huge, settled population of Muslim and other religious minorities. In a comment that described the poll’s findings as “at once reassuring and disturbing’’, The Daily Telegraph said the six per cent of Muslims who felt the bombings were justified, “may seem a small proportion but in absolute numbers it amounts to about 100,000 individuals, who if not prepared to carry out terrorist acts, are ready to support those who do’’. On Saturday, British police gave few details of the arrest of two men held on terrorism charges in the broad sweep of the investigation into London’s terror attacks. Twenty-four per cent of the Muslims contacted for the survey said they had sympathy with the feelings and motives of those who carried out the multiple, serial attacks on London. A substantial majority—56% said that whether or not they sympathised with the bombers, they could at least understand why some people might want to behave in this way. Fifty-eight per cent said they thought the ideology of the bombers was “perverted and poisonous’’, in line with Prime Minister Tony Blair’s public comments. But roughly 26% expressed reluctance about such dismissiveness, the survey said. Eighteen per cent of the Muslims said they felt little loyalty towards Britain, a finding described by the paper as indicating that “well over 100,000 British Muslims feel no loyalty whatsoever towards this country’’. However, the survey found that less than half of all Muslims said they felt “very loyal’’.

The newspaper said, in comments expected to be picked up and played up over the coming weeks and months, that its poll was “remarkable’’ in its revelation of “the sheer scale of Muslim alienation from British society’’. 100,000 feel London attacks were justified, are ready to support terror acts

China...RMB NRI people calculations....

Considered as a third world country, suffering from high population, low literacy rates, anti-capitalistic attitude, and high corruption rates no body would have expected that one day China or People Republic of China can influence the global market in such a way. I have been wondering why its not happening with India which China could do in such a short time span..Anyway its really beyond my knowledge and thinking space..Coming to the point just yesterday China revalued its currency RMB . Now it trades against a pool of currencies rather than green back...Since this march I have been hearing the speculation that China is going to re-value and observing the changes in Indian rupee value compared to $ and other currencies..I am sure lot of other Indian expats would have been observing the same changes in the recent past...In march 2005 if I compare the local currency to INR it used be some X. But in July it was X-12% which makes my total savings go down a bit...:) (too selfish ..aint I)..But after the news broke out there was a immediate gain in the local currency by 2%....Some people says that it could be more high with the time..Does it make sense to have a strong currency in India right now considering the trade gap we are having or is it better to have less value compared to the $...Anyway I am not a financial analyst to compare the pros and cons but my 2c on the news as well as may be I can read through some more articles which may explain to me the implications on the global currency values or atleast Indias currency...( I just heard that if RMB increases 1% means a 1.5% increase in Global Trade as well as business...Ofcourse didn't really understood about it but wish I can hear the same about INR).. Why are you worshipping the ground I blog on?

md5 ...crack it

I was wonderring weather is there a tool that could break a MD5 hash fast.(some statistics says a typical software takes few days to crack..Which I never tried but when i see the documents i felt like its very difficult...But again today I realized how stupid it is to trust a hashing algorithem when the password itself is not strong enough...I installed this software"cain & able" and within few minuites i was able to retrive the password for a CISCO PIX Firewall..This was hashed but the problem is its a standard dictionary word..it made the job very easy..
Recently it happened to see this document at CNET "Password;the weakest link". Although its a very old document ,roughly about a couple of years old still it applies to todays world exactly...
So far the system owner is not doing his job nothing is hard..weather the server is protected by a enterprise grade firewall with all the latest security patches or intrusion detection systems..all these can delay the attack but cant prevent that...the user education which most of the firms are ignoring is the most crucial part...
with user education we can really work with the addons like perimeter security devices or intrusion detection systems to effectively protect the network..hope the firms will realize the importance of it and make it a part of every user learning programme

Putting on weight...SBS recommends to walk...

Singapore...the small "red" dot in the World Map..This country/City became by second home after I left my mother land few years back...I dont want to comapare or argue the pros and cons here..I believe to get something we need to loose something...coming to the better point this country has got very good public transport, where we can just see the next bus arrival time by simply sending an sms...(specific to the telco Singtel)..The bus stops will be a max 200 meters apart..even some times you can see two bus stops just 100 m apart as well..
But recently i was trying to get the bus trip details ( Click here to check)from the service provider website...I got something like this...
incidentally the distance between "orchard emerald" and "bedok res road" is ~10 KM...
May be they understood that now a days I am putting on weight and recommending to walk me around...sorry guys, under any case walking about that distance is really too much for me..hope you can give me some practical suggestion...

3G handphone Motorola A1000;Comments complaints

After spending lot of time reading the reviews and comparing with the existing models and their features finally I opted for Motorola A1000 for my new 3G connection.
I was too excited to ignore two things. One is the IR or Infrared connection which can be used for file transfers or connecting to internet; The other is "Internal memory"...Really I have to admit I was too excited to observe these petty but very important things...Without IR I need to depend on Bluetooth which not many of the notebooks have(I need to buy a add-on by spending 30 bucks); without the internal memory (only of 24 MB) I cant install as many ring tones i want or play games..when the memory reaches 50% I can observe the performance drops..
Another sad part is FM..Without the inbuilt memory if I need to opt for some music or news then I cant do that because there is no built in FM...I looked in google and found that there is a Motorola FM adapter available @ UK shops..When I contacted my local Motorola customer care it was an awfully bad experience..I asked them two questions one is about FM and the other is about the transflash..For my first question I got the answer "Sir you can purchase a separate FM station very cheaply..Anyway I dont think so we do have any FM adapters available for this model..I told them I saw it in internet (or UK)..the lady gently replied saying I am sorry sir but in Singapore we dont have here and I dont think so we will be getting them soon.."...Then the question is about transflash..the answer is no different...I apologize for that sir, but presently we dont have them in stock..but you can try @ SIMLIM...." this was indeed a very good suggestion..I am so stupid to call the customer care and ask them..Instead I should have gone to simlim or funan and try there ...
anyway thx a lot to the customer care...it may be nothing wrong to say that but i feel really sad to listen to the excuses..Hope time to change my handphone.

I think the day is not so far as even today a basic endpoint got the ability to interpret the voice commands..And we are already seeing the software's for UIQ and 60 series which can do a lot of wonderfully things including the GPS, Dictionary, translation and personnel financing...

While browing one of my fav blogs came across with this info...If we see it its not only relavent to the americans..its everywhere...anyway if you ask me to eat the raw food or only vegetables I am afraid i cant survive but definetely I love to stick to vegetarian food...

Rain Rain Rain

Every day we see articles in the papers and television about the fruits independence bought to us...Leaders are talking about the tremendours progress we have achived, the improved life quaility and the new developments...scientists are so enthusiastic to have plans to send man in to the space..The country which boasts to have a major share in world IT market....
People with great culture..Country with more than 5000 years of wonderful heritaze...

But no one can give a solution to these small problems...or no history can show some solution.

Its the peoples mentality...the man's attitude...why so strange..no consideration to the other people..
It just rained for one hour and because of that the traffic took more than five hours to start moving on...because every one want to go on and no one doesnt have any sort of respect to the rules and regulations you try your own way and find your own roads...:)
thats what makes "Mera Bharat Mahan"...
have a look at this city with population more than 4 M and often refers the latest IT capitol of India(am not sure why but most of the news papers refers so and Microsoft opened its first offshore development city here it self)

SIP..Session Initiation Protocol

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us. - Alexander Graham Bell

This really inspires me and gives me enough energy to continue in my personeel life as well as professiona life...This is the day I really havent wished but it came n almost more than an year passed by;
anyway life has to go on...

coming to the point again and after one year time today I spend the whole day at work banging my head over the alcatel sip servers and softwares..I really donno what went wrong or its me who is checking it wrongly but it simply refused to work...We need to finish the entire project very soon and still when I look at the project gant chart I dont see any reached milestones..I just can see only elapsed posts and prolonged deadlines...:
So now its time to restart again and rethink what went wrong and where did it went wrong..Started to read about the complete architecture of the protocol and trying to understand it more clarly..
atleast if I know the end to end architecture I can have a better control over the whole project..
so this weekend is totally dedicated to SIP and its basics..
hope I can have a great week and I am sure I am gonna have it..

Now am really really looking in to the SIP technology..( not interest but my company asked me to have a complete understanding of what it is and how can we utilize it)..LoL..

Hritik Roshan shifting to Singapore...;)

Come September and star actor Hritihk Roshan would say Kaho Na Pyaar Hai to the lovely Singapore for next 60 days.

With all set for Rakesh Roshan's Krrish, the sequel to Koi... Mil Gaya, to be shot in Singapore for a 60-day nonstop from September to November, the city of business tycoons is going to be Hritihik's second home.

"Now Singapore will be like a second home to me," said Hrithik Roshan accompanied by his father after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with the Singapore Tourism Board for the shooting.

Announcing the deal Rakesh Roshan said, "I always wanted to shoot a film in Singapore but somehow I never got the script. I am happy that with Krrish I can achieve my goal as the film's second half will be entirely shot in Singapore. After signing this agreement, I can close down the highways and expressway in Singapore, and freely shoot, with their permission. We can have all the stunts, and jumping from building to building too."

"The movie has stunts. It does not have too much action but it has a lot of thrilling sequences. It is about, how Hrithik has got powers where he can run faster than a horse, run faster than a car and when he is running he can leap like a deer. I hope that the people like this.", said Rakesh Roshan, talking about the movie.

Over 100 cast and crew will fly from India, China and US to Singapore during this period. The director will showcase unique locations in Singapore including the world renowned Singapore Zoo, the state of the art concert venue 'The Esplanade', a heritage pier built in 1933, the cultural repository of Chinatown, the bustling lifestyle districts along Singapore River and one of Singapore's rustic islands 'Pulau Ubin'.

The reason behind being Rakesh Roshan next movie Krrish which is to be shot in Singapore. As a part of this collaboration, Rakesh Roshan would film close to 60 per cent of his film Krrish in the island state, with the STB facilitating the logistic support and ground requirements for the filming in Singapore. Both father and son, Rakesh and Hritik Roshan are happy.

This will be the first film to be shot in Singapore under the STB's 'Film in Singapore Scheme'. Under the $10-million scheme, filmmakers and broadcasters will be encouraged to shoot and produce movies and television programmes in Singapore. The funding is proposed to be disbursed in three years and will subsidise up to 50 per cent of the qualifying expenses incurred during the shoot in Singapore.

"This tie-up would be a win-win proposition for both the STB and the film-maker. While the film will showcase various facets of the city-state to a large audience in India, the film team would gain from the logistics support to be provided by the STB on-site," said Mr Lim Neo Chian, Deputy Chairman & Chief Executive, STB, while addressing presspersons here today.

According to Mr Roshan, the range and diversity of locations offered by Singapore in a small area made the city-state an ideal choice for film-making.

Hrithik will have three different hairstyles in the film, Rakesh informed.

So will Jadoo the alien be a part of Krrish, considering that it is a sequel to the 2003 hit Koi Mil Gaya?

"I better not comment on that as that will amount to revealing too much of the script," said Rakesh.

"Rakesh Roshan has a tremendous track record as a filmmaker. We feel he will do his best to promote our country as one of the favourite destinations for Indian tourists, via his film," said Lim Neo Chain, deputy chairman and chief executive, Singapore Tourism Board.

The film is expected to release by June 2006.

a father does what IAF couldnt...

Ahmedabad: Small-screen superhero Shaktimaan faces serious competition—from Ahmedabad-based businessman Rajesh Sheth.
The inclement weather and swirling flood waters that prevented IAF choppers and the entire might of the Gujarat administration from reaching about 400 stranded passengers of the Shanti Express at Dakor for over 36 hours, Sheth conquered, almost single-handedly, to rescue not only his wife Abha and daughter Manali, but also 70 other pasengers.
Sitting in his 108-room ancestral mansion in Shahpur after a hard day, Sheth said one desperate phone call from his wife, Abha, was enough to convince him that he would have to do the unthinkable to save his family. “After spending a couple of hours in the stranded train, she called me at 12 noon on Thursday and said water was entering their train. The moment she hung up, I decide to go there,’’ said Sheth, a devotee of Vaishno Devi.
“He is my Shaktimaan. Once he said that he was coming to rescue us, I knew he would move heaven and earth to reach us,’’ said a proud Abha. And heaven and earth Sheth did move. “I left Ahmedabad at about 12.30 pm on Thursday and till 3 am I kept going around Nadiad district trying to find a safe route to Dakor. I did lose hope when I saw two policemen being swept away in the strong current in Kheda town. While one of them managed to swim across, my efforts to save the other went in vain,’’ said Sheth, recalling the gruelling day when he drove 450 km on inundated roads.
Unable to proceed further, Sheth stayed back in Nadiad waiting for the water to recede. However, with no signs of the water level going down he returned to Ahmedabad, but
with a plan. On Friday, he decided to take with him a motorcade—a car, two multi-utility vehicles and a truck that was loaded with bread, butter and other eatables. “This time, I was determined to reach Dakor. As I began my journey, Abha called me and said they could see some vehicular movement. That gave me hope,’’ he said.

On Friday, he left Ahmedabad with a motorcade. Not wanting to waste time, he drove like a man possessed on roads that were submerged in water that was three feet deep. He said he managed to reach the train just as it was getting dark. “I called out for my daughter Manali. A group of four to five people came forward to help me. After distributing bananas, bread and other eatables, we decided it was time to take people to safety,’’ he said.
Abha said they decided to move out the children and the elderly first. While the volunteers carried the children on their shoulders, the women and the aged were guided to vehicles parked about one km from the train. Sheth said although he offered to take many more people to safety, most of them chose to stay back and wait for the authorities to make arrangements for them.
