'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says
This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.
I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots.
I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.
None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
My second story is about love and loss.
I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
My third story is about death.
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Quite obviously they want to fight in the different approach..this is always the methodology for the western people..If you cant fight the enmey directly then go for the different approach...they dont even ready to backstab..hahaha..its any way the so called "practical n professional" way...
We are seeing everyday how the American Credit comapnies are loosing millions of card information including the SSN details and everything..you need to divert the attention to something else which may rise the attention of eveyrone...So come and target the sensitive issues...
In the first place how can a call center executive can come to know of the credit card numbers..its the absurd assumption ..if he followed the social engineering methods to get the same methodology could be applied even in UK..or anywhere in the world...How stupid it is to print this ..anyway the magazine it self is not worth anything of mentioning it here..

Credit Cards....I cant imagine my self paying the money for some one elses holiday,
or shopping...The firms talk a lot about the security and the kinda technologies they use to protect the consumer but everyday we hear the data theft..
Lucky I still dont have a plastic but still i am scared to think about the internet accounts...;)

banks.

A transport company with 119,000 employees, assets over few hundred millions, operating more than 19,000 buses (this gives it as the largest fleet operator in the world), transporting 11,000,000 commuters daily and more interestingly the one and only licensed operator to run its services across the state...
All these records and statements may make this firm as the best or the blue chip share in some other country. But not here...Yes...It’s our own APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation), which is running losses over INR 13,500,000,000. It has got a great reputation and the operating costs were quite under control...The load factor is quite good as well. Government gives subsidies every year and every now and then we see Govt granting few millions for this “public sector” company to run its operations smoothly as this is “public service”. What a pity.
Who is culprit here.. Is it the politicians who just make false promises to get the masses votes in the elections, or the employees of the corporation who enjoys benefits like free transport to the entire family, or it’s the management who cant provide timely service to the customers who end up traveling by other means.
The politicians every time promises to improve the corporation’s position and make it more profitable. But no one knows how. They knows that the RTC financial position is very bad still they want to have special buses for them and special discounts for them. They appoint a Highly qualified person as the chairman of the corporation. Most of the time the criteria is similar. First and foremost he should be from the party in power, then he must have some criminal record, and he shall be paying the money in white to party fund n in black to >>>>>...
How can we expect the management to make good decisions or give better services.
On the other hand if we look in to the employee base, we are quite familiar with the words RTC is on Strike. It’s more like a scheduled one. Every year there will be these events disturbing the normal life of public. They take our lives as ransom and announce strike at the time of festive events or examinations time. When the corporation claims it a public sector organization and its main purpose it to serve the people how can they do like this.
RTC always ask the government to sanction the grant for the subsidies its giving to the school children and old age people. Does RTC have any social responsibility to serve the masses?
RTC always claim that it belongs to the masses to don’t take any other transport thus saving it self. When it says it has to remember that it is obliged to serve the people. How much money RTC is wasting on its directors (Some unemployed or retired relatives of ministers) remunerations or the Air Conditioned complexes, where only rats and its directors can live.
Why does the organization needs more than 119,000 employees where the fleet is only about 19,000. That makes 6 employees per bus. And at the same time the productivity just sucks. Okie. I try to understand the claim of providing the secure transport. Where the other operators run with very less accident rates how come RTC with such a great employee / Bus ratio often dives the buses in to rivers or rams in to trains. Does RTC have an agreement with the rulers of hell or with the ministry of population control? Where is the service if the service is their so called motto. Recently I used a Hi-Tech bus (Supposed to be the best) from Vijayawada to Hyderabad. In this travel the bus A/C was not working so we complained to the driver. The answer he gave was anyway its cool, are you guys can’t live without A/C? With this kind of attitude if they expect the support for their causes I think it’s next to impossible.
If we see in to RTC detailed financials one may say that RTC did quite well in the past but due to the previous chief minister privatization or strategies it’s dying now. I beg to defer with that assumption.
The TFP growth rate is 1.52 to 1.6 between 1999-00 and 03-04. Where as the R/C is a pathetic -2.5%. But I strongly agree with the assumption that this is due to the competition. Its quite obvious when there is a choice of better service with competitive pricing available no customer prefer to take a service which is more costly and with the horrifying experiences.
End of the storey...RTC needs about 100,000,000 INR immediately or it will be defaulted to settle this month’s bill.
I wish to see some leader to take the daring decision.
All these records and statements may make this firm as the best or the blue chip share in some other country. But not here...Yes...It’s our own APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation), which is running losses over INR 13,500,000,000. It has got a great reputation and the operating costs were quite under control...The load factor is quite good as well. Government gives subsidies every year and every now and then we see Govt granting few millions for this “public sector” company to run its operations smoothly as this is “public service”. What a pity.

"Metro" Document format by Microsoft.....
At the WinHEC keynote in April, Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates previewed Metro, the company's next-generation, XML-based, electronic-document initiative that is expected to become available at around the same time Windows Longhorn is released
Some features
*it's a new document file format, similar in many ways to PDF.
*It's also a spool format. When you print on a Windows or a Mac computer, the print system has a format that it uses to communicate the data through the print subsystem and spool it to the device
*it's also a page description language, similar to PCL PostScript, that can be used to transmit that information all the way down to a printer, where it turns into the data that comes out on a piece of paper
*Microsoft announced they're fixing a number of the printing bottlenecks and issues in the current Windows subsystem by implementing a new architecture for printing that includes Metro as a key foundation of that architecture.
*Metro is very tightly related to this thing called WinFX. WinFX is a supplementary or replacement set of APIs that will allow people to develop applications in a way that mixes the best of the rich-client approach, the best of an application that runs on Windows today that has a rich user interface, and mix that with the best of a Web-based application, the kinds of things you get from things like Flickr or Google maps or things like that
Most likely this is aimed at Adobe....I am quite sure Microsoft has got the power n money to gain the market share...(simply they can bundle with the OS..I am sure they are going to do that)...But there are certain things with Adobe...First the loyal customer base...I myself dont see a reason why I should go for a different document format instead of PDF which is quite good and have been using for years....But who knows MS can do wonders here...;)
Second certain things are really really will be there in any microsoft product..and the large open source user base which is quite opposite to MS products may promote PDF as well..

Recently our organization found the cabir worm in one of the MMS message...This made most of the staff to go panic as this is the first time we heard about mobile virus or came across such thing...so far we have been thinking that mobile world is quite safe and its a world of good people..as we have a good understanding on telecom protocols we never expected the worm propogation via the SS7 networks..but sorry guys we are convergin...slowly to IP..n 3G offers tons of new features because of the big pipe...so does the risk of the worms or viruses it inherits from the internet...
When this news broke out the management immedietly asked us to look in to the alternatives..its really very difficult...we have seen sophos,mcafee, norton as well F-Secure..out of all f-secure does have a bit mature model.but the rest all are in the early stages n not very clear...At the same time the money we may have to put is worth a fortune...how can we justify for that when the total mobile phones running on symbian are quite less compared to the rest...or there is no proof that the end user will be ready to buy the service....
Is it something to do with the strategy of AV vendors..or are they looking for new markets to push the product..certainly the vendors will be looking for new markets but are we really at risk? thats the big question...

another weekend
Another weekend...Now a days its quite fast..days are just passing by like minuits..yeah..may be its because I am too busy with work that getting out of all the things...anyway just this morning i saw this old men who is working in the coffe shop as a cleaner...one thing is really this person made my day...may be to correct it he had a grt impression on me...on my attitude as well...He is about 60+ or probably 70( i am not very good guessing chinese ages..)..but the attitude towards work is really admiring....if the same kinda attitude can be inculcated to our coleagues we could do wonders.(Including me..)
Added to that just planning to go home n at the same time on a holiday as well....so just dreamin about it..

Sony Camcoder DCR-PC1000E..
A bit busy with the work and with life as well.;)
I've been planning to get a camcoder since aeons..but the issue with me is i am quite picky..i dont like to get something just for the sake of it..after reading tons of reviews and nagging the pro's with my stupid posts in the forums finally i decided to go for Sony DCR-PC1000 series...It has got lot of beautiful things inside its small body..then comes the money issue...i am not sure weather is it worth to spend about 1500 bucks for this...anyway finally yesterday morning i just went to a computer show where i am quite impressed with its look as well as the feature set..finally i bought it..so since yesterday till now ( I am sure its gonna take some more time)my friends are deserting me..coz i am just lovin this cute cam n explaining about its featurs to them...hahaha...
anyway I still remember some time back i was plannign to take to present it to my gal..lately i bought it...till i visit home in this coming november i am gonna have grt time with it...already my thinkpad is crying for more disk space and ofcourse some rest...guess its gonna get angry ...
